Finding Your Own Angels - 12/28/2011

Along your journey of entrepreneurship you will find your own angels that help you get your business off the ground.  This might be your first customer that gives you a "break" and says "I know your product is untested, but I will take a chance on you and try it out".

Or it might be a reporter that says "I'll spend some of my precious time writing about you and your products as I can see an angle for my readers".

Or it might be someone with money that says "the idea isn't 100 % developed but I think you got great potential and I will put some money behind you.".

Or simply a friend that says "I will take 5 minutes out of my day to tell my friends about your business or introduce you to someone that can help."

And a host of other angels will join you along your journey of entrepreneurship to help you get to your goals.

The only way the angels will appear though is if you start your journey.  If you take the first step.  Angels exist everywhere but they only appear when they know they are needed.  An idea in your head doesn't give an angel a chance to come help you.  Do something, take the first steps and the angels will eventually start appearing.

Are you worthy of an award in 2011? - 12/21/2011
"Give me enough medals, and I will win any war."
Napoleon Bonaparte, military genius.

Napoleon believed that it wasn't money that incentivated men to fight harder in battles, but simply the honor of winning a medal.

Did you ever notice that all the winners of the Oscar's lived around Los Angeles?  The Oscars were a self-serving way to promote and grow the movie industry. In that same regard, we have the first annual "Webpreneur Academy" Awards.

These awards are primarily put in place to promote our own students, friends as well as great products and services in the field of education, entrepreneurship, innovation and internet.

If you feel that you or your company (or that of a friend) deserves some recognition, and a bit of extra press than please do nominate them http://www.webpreneuracademy.com/topic/awards.

The awards ceremony is free to attend (6 PM to 8 PM on Friday 23, Dec at Block 1, Knowledge Village, Dubai), you must register first though:  http://www.webpreneuracademy.com/topic/awards.

The faculty and students of Webpreneur Academy will determine the winner for each category.

The prize?  Recognition and PR in the Middle Eastern media and the bragging rights to being the best that 2011 had to offer.  Remember you saying "you are the best" is often not as powerful as an external party saying you are the best.

This is the first year we are running the awards and probably a little easier to win than the tougher competition you will have in 2012.

You are also welcome to join the Webpreneur Weekend Camp learning how to win in the internet economy which takes place during the day (10 Am to 6 PM on Friday 23 Dec):  http://www.webpreneuracademy.com/Products/webpreneur-weekend

Part of my duty as the Dean of Webpreneur Academy is to promote my students so that they become more successful.  The reason your business is probably not doing as well as it could, is that you don't have a team doing the PR for you like facebook/twitter/groupon and all the other billion dollar companies based in the United States do.  Joining the Webpreneur family will give you more exposure!

Here is the program for Friday 23, Dec 2011 - Block 1, Knowledge Village, Dubai

Webpreneur Weekend 10 am to 6 pm
I teach during the day about how you can use the internet to kick start your business.  This is powerful content that has taken me over 18 months to develop and will save you years of work and doing things the longer/expensive way.  You can register for the training here:  http://www.webpreneuracademy.com/Products/webpreneur-weekend

If finances aren't too healthy at the moment, we are now offering interest free student loans, so money should not be the thing stopping you from attending! http://www.webpreneuracademy.com/topic/student-loans

Webpreneur Academy Awards 6 pm to 8 pm
This event is to help promote regional businesses and startups.  It is free to nominate anyone and we will give as much exposure to the nominees and winners as possible through media.  The award ceremony is free to attend and nominees can be from anywhere in the world.  More info at:   http://www.webpreneuracademy.com/topic/awards

I hope that either I see you for the Webpreneur Weekend Camp on Friday morning in which you will learn some truly advanced methods of marketing and branding in the internet economy or I see you at the award ceremony in the evening.

Questions/Concerns just call me on +971 55 394 9094 and please do pass this on to any friends that might benefit!

54th Wind - 11/26/2011

There is a phenomena in distance running known as the "second wind".   This is when the runner gets really tired a long way into the race.   She feels that she can't go on.   And all of a sudden, she crosses a phycological barrier and gets "second wind" and is able to go on and complete the race.

Entrepreneurship is also a LONG race. It isn't a sprint. And you won't just need second wind, but you will need third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eight, ninth, tenth.....and a whole lot more winds too.

Thomas Edison had one thousand failures before he was able to invent the light bulb.

Colonel Sanders started Kentucky Fried Chicken at the age of 65 after his gas station had failed due to a new motorway being built and taking away all his traffic.  He took $105 from his first social security cheque and began looking for franchisees.  He sold the American rights to his KFC restaurants ten years later for $2 million to a local businessman.  Having sold the rights to his restaurants in the United States, he moved to Ontario, Canada and started his chain in Canada at the age of 75.

You too will need the resilience of an entrepreneur. To find your second, third, fourth or whatever number you are on wind.

There will be a whole lot of people encouraging you to give up. To find a day job. To tell you that you are crazy.

And there will be a few cheering you on too. Letting you know that you might be tired, and you might feel like stopping and getting in a taxi, but you have to keep going.  And if you do keep going, eventually you will find your 53rd wind.  And if the 53rd wind has also died out, than the 54th wind will also be here soon.

The great thing about entrepreneurship is that there is no finish line. When Steve Jobs took over Apple again for his second wind in the late 1990s it was three months away from bankruptcy.  A decade later it became the most valuable organisation in the world.  Good thing Steve didn't stop after his first wind died out.

When Steve was at the hospital getting operated on for his cancer in his last days, he kept finding faults with the usability of the hospital equipment and suggested ways to improve the equipment to the hospital staff.

There won't be a moment that you "complete" everything.  A day where you can say "the world is now perfect, and I have no more ideas to make things better.".  Because such a place and time doesn't exist.  You will always have another idea or another way to make things better.

And if your ideas are taking a while to happen, than remember the 54th wind - it will be here soon.
